Letter To Parents: Instruction Resumes May 19, 2020

With school nearly over, and with Governor Abbott’s plan to reopen Texas, we are eagerly preparing for our students to return to Academics Plus in person! In our online format, our students have been able to continue developing metacognitive and critical thinking strategies, paragraph writing, active learning skills, reading efficiency, decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, and mathematical reasoning all from home “face to face” with A+ staff. Now we look forward to resuming instruction at the center, providing our full programs and an academic context in which to practice these skills as we prepare for the new school year.

Our intent is to reopen the center to students Tuesday, May 19, pending any new or lessened restrictions by Governor Abbott on May 18.  Online instruction will continue as scheduled through May 18. This staggered reopening allows us time to prepare additional safety measures to protect our staff and students. Our first priority is to provide a safe environment for our students’ continued academic progress in accordance with CDC, state, and local health recommendations.

Our summer hours will remain the same as our current Adjusted Spring Schedule. Your child’s schedule will not change unless you submit a request to do so.Knowing that some students may be unable to return to in-person instruction at this time due to individual and family health situations, we will continue to offer online instruction to those at risk for a limited time. We will assume your child is returning to in-person instruction unless you notify us otherwise.

Below we have compiled a list of questions you may have regarding this transition. If your question is not listed, please don’t hesitate to reach out via phone or email.

Anticipated Questions about the A+ Return to the Center:

  • I am concerned about my child being unprepared for the coming school year. What can I do? Now is the perfect time to increase your child’s hours so we can make extra growth prior to the new school year. A+ students have beating summer slide for the last 28 years; we can certainly beat the quarantine slide as well!
  • What safety precautions will you be taking to keep A+ staff and students safe? Please see the attached safety procedures and practices we will be following to ensure safety. These will be updated as CDC, state, and local guidelines are updated. Please be aware:
    • All students will be REQUIRED to wear a mask to enter the center. This is to keep everyone safe.
      • We will not be providing masks for each child. You will need to provide one. We have several A+ parents who have been sewing masks. Please let us know if you need us to help you acquire one for your child.
    • Parents should not enter the center unless absolutely necessary per advice to minimize the amount of people entering the center daily.
  • What action is required of me as a parent regarding my child’s schedule? You will bring your child to the center according to their current schedule starting May 19. No other action is needed UNLESS:
    • …you need to change their in-person schedule. Please call, email, or submit the attached form.
    • …your child is unable to return to the center at this time due to health risks. Please let us know and we will continue his/her current online schedule.
    • …you wish to add hours to take advantage of this extra time before the new school year. Please call, email, or submit the attached form.
  • What is your schedule for instruction? Will you offer Saturdays in June and July?
    • Yes! A new 2020 calendar is attached to reflect that we are OPEN for Saturdays this June and July. Our Summer Schedule is the same as our current Adjusted Spring Schedule. It is as follows:
      • Mondays 3:30pm-8:30pm
      • Tuesdays 9:00am-12:00pm, 3:30pm-7:30pm
      • Wednesdays 9:00am-12:00pm, 3:30pm-8:30pm
      • Thursdays 9:00am-12:00pm, 3:30pm-8:30pm
      • Saturdays 9:00am-3:00pm
  • How long will you continue to offer online instruction? This is to be determined based on CDC, state, and local guidelines. For now, we will continue to offer online instruction to those in at risk populations.
  • What if Governor Abbott increases restrictions on May 18? Should the governor increase restrictions, we will continue with online instruction and current online schedules. We will confirm this change by contacting all parents through email on May 18.
  • Will parent conferences be conducted in person as well? No. We will continue conducting all parent conferences through Zoom indefinitely. This reduces the amount of people entering the center.
  • When will testing resume? We will resume diagnostic testing on a limited basis starting this week. Progress testing will not resume until after in-person instruction is in place and will be determined during your parent conference based on your child’s individual hours and needs.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email. These are indeed challenging times, but we can navigate them together, all the while creating stimulating academic growth!

Sincerely,
