World Book Day

Happy World Book Day!

Although the term implies one unified day, World Book Day is celebrated on different days in different parts of the world. In the USA, we celebrate on April 23rd. At Academics Plus, we celebrate everyday!

We know many of our students don’t necessarily enjoy reading, so I wanted to share some of our favorites to help encourage everyone to pick up a good book.

1. Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles) by Marissa Meyer

Cinder is the first in a series of fairytell retellings from Marissa Meyer. This book is a people-living-on-the-moon, cyborg-saving-the-world retelling of Cinderella, where the princess saves the prince.

2. Ranger’s Apprentice Series by John Flanagan

Ranger’s Apprentice is a fun romp through a medieval-ish world full of friendship and dry humor. If you love rooting for an underdog becoming the unlikely hero, Will is the character for you.

3. Before the Ever After by Jacqueline Woodson (available to borrow at A+!)

ZJ’s dad was a football superstar before things got confusing and difficult. The reader witnesses the effects that sports culture has on players and their families told in verse from ZJ’s perspective.

4. The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

Roz must survive a remote island full of treacherous weather and unwelcoming animal inhabitants. Slowly, the robot begins to adapt and thrive in her new environment, when her past comes to collect.

5. The Taking of Jake Livingston by Ryan Douglass

Jake has a hard time at school and at home.To top it off: he can see ghosts. When Jake’s the only one who can a dark, vengeful spirit start to influence his own world, he has to take action to keep himself and his loved ones safe.

6. Front Desk by Kelly Yang

Mia manages the front desk of a motel, while her parents do the hard work behind the scenes. Mia, spunky and brave, fights for justice for everyone, but how can she keep it together when she’s keeping so many secrets?

7. The Someday Suitcase by Corey Ann Haydu

Danny is sick, and the doctor’s can’t quite fix it, but he’s always better with Clover around. The duo are in a race against time to do all the things they want to do, together. Mostly, they want to take their “someday suitcase” and see snow for the first time.

8. Scythe by Neal Shusterman

In a fantastical utopia, humanity has conquered death. Two unwilling teens take on the role of Scythes- to end lives to balance humanity, with the risk of losing their own if they fail.

9. Frizzy: A Graphic Novel by Claribel A. Ortega

Marlene is growing up, and to some people that means she must change her appearance. But Marlene doesn’t like the weekly visits to straighten her hair, and she likes even less that she feels pressured to go. Marlene, and readers, learn the important lesson of embracing your sense of self.

I’m always looking for good book recommendations, so I’d love to hear everyone’s favorites! Happy reading, everyone!
